Teamrace weekend Friesland 11 October
Sailing in Z420’s, Laser Vago`s and Bahia`s at zeilschool de Kikkert against 12 mostly Dutch university teams and the Dutch national champion. This was the Dutch qualifier for the Laser Performance Collegiate Cup. In the end team ‘Onder de duim’ was able to win the finals, winning the tickets for the event next year.

After a very joyful and instructive first team racing event with high level sailing two years ago I am very excited to get together a team again for the 2019 LPCC edition at the gorgeous Lake Garda.

Global Team Racing Regatta
Unfortunately the Global Team Racing Regatta has reached its maximum number of 12 entries: Bayerische Yacht Club Dutch, Match & Team Racing Association, Japan Sailing Federation, Newport Harbor Yacht Club, New York Yacht Club, Royal Bombay Yacht Club, Royal Cork Yacht Club, Royal Thames Yacht Club, Royal Yacht Squadron, Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club, St Francis Yacht Club, Yacht Club Argentino.
We will further focus on our technique and teamracing tactics with the help of high level coaches this winter. This so we can have a Belgian team attending the team sailing worlds for the first time in 2020 and be a worthy adversary.
Royal Thames Yacht Club Younger Members weekend 6-7July 2019
Very excited for our overall win of the RTYC YM weekend, helming and doing the bow alternately with Edward on J70’s in Cowes, against the Royal London Yacht Club, Royal Yacht Squadron and Royal Thames Yacht club younger members.
On Saturday we had lots of short races with typical tricky Solent conditions – huge amounts of tide with light wind speeds – this meant running the kite as long as possible to be able to round the downwind buoy. Aggressive starts from the first race and no fishing with the kite resulted in several bullets.
On Saturday evening a drinks party was hosted by the older Thames members in the RYS Haven before joining the Royal Yacht Squadron Younger Members for their annual dinner in the RYS pavilion. Lively dancing at the Royal London ensued at midnight, resulting in less excited guests in pyjamas joining in for the fun – ask Alex how that went 😉 .
On Sunday we joined the starting line with the bigger yachts of the Cumberland Regatta for one long race around the Solent. We had a great start, first over the line, however with increasing wind speeds and with only 3 on board we couldn’t get the same upwind speed as our main rival, Squadron member Thomas, to make it to the first buoy located somewhere on a close hauled course. This upwind buoy proved to be tricky to find, both Thomas and us had to do a hard bear away to round the upwind buoy, with the main fleet coming in fast.
On the long spinnaker reach leg back to Cowes we huddled together on the stern of the boat and had steer a slightly lower course to keep us from broaching. In the meantime Ella was joyously overtaking us, being able to keep a higher course with four hiking on her boat.
For upwind leg to the finish the wind died down again, and with the ever increasing tide we had some nerve-racking moments trying to guess the right angle to steer make it to the finish line. A 3rd place for this race meant an overall win for the weekend! Looking forward to the RTYC prize winners dinner in November.

“Lets start with the highlights.
Friday evening the Yacht Club totally met its promise of a great social evening, a very Italian BarB Q, followed by music and dancing well into the night.
Saturday evening and the party moves to the Yacht Club restaurant, superb food and wine and then the teams discovered the night clubs and bars of Gaeta.
Sunday morning and all are feeling hopeful of a great day of Gaeta racing as we were greeted with a fresh breeze from what looked the right direction. All afloat and the breeze changed direction and then died.
Eventually there was just enough wind to start the racing. Bavaria vs Serpentine. Serpentine were clearly the team to beat as they had a no loss record… but losing the start was to prove their undoing. In what was increasingly light conditions Bavaria were able to keep in the puff, with a 1-2 only briefly challenged.
Then the wind died completely. A skippers pow wow and racing was agreed to be abandoned. Well not all bad news, as just across the road are a range of brilliant Gelateria …and the sun was shining brightly and the water temperature was just perfect for a long and refreshing swim.”
